One of the highlights I had in Kobe was definitely trying Kobe beef. It was the first time my family and I had tried beef of such high standards. Kobe beef is a Japanese delicacy renowned for its superior flavour, marbled appearance and tenderness. After our trip to Rokkosan Pasture, we decided to go to Mouriya Sannomiya Restaurant for our lunch. It was just after 2pm when we reached the place. The place wasn’t very crowded. There were only 2 or 3 other guests dining beside us. They seemed to be tourists as well.
After looking through the menu, we ordered 2 sets of sirloin steak and 1 set of prime rib eye. Mouriya restaurants serve meat of A4 and A5 standards (A5 being the highest standard for beef). The meat they purchased are strictly examined and carefully selected. Other choices on the menu were fillet steak, round steak and rump steak.
Sirloin Steak 170g (A4~A5) - 14000 Yen ($185 SGD)*
Prime Rib eye 180g (A5) - 12500 Yen ($165 SGD)*

We were served with soup and salad as appetizers. We had a personal chef cooking for us as by that time our food came we were the only ones left in the restaurant. He skilfully sliced our meat and started grilling in front of us. The fats from the Kobe beef were removed and cut into smaller pieces and sautéed with vegetables.
On our plates, we were given some deep fried garlic, salt, black pepper and wasabi to eat with the beef. Each of them brought something different to our taste palette. I was surprised by how well wasabi and Kobe beef tasted together. I always thought wasabi can only be used for sashimi and sushi. Who knew!
The food quality and service at Mouriya was first-class. Although Kobe beef is generally quite expensive, I feel that it is worth trying at least once. If ever I have the chance of going to Kobe again, this is the restaurant that I definitely have to visit again!
