My family and I arrived at Saga Torokko Station at about 12.45pm to buy tickets to ride on the Sagano Romantic Train. The ticketing counter was already very crowded. We tried to get tickets to the 1.07pm train, but it was already sold out. We bought tickets for the next earliest ride at 2.07pm. As we had some time to spare, we visited the 19th Century Hall, which is located within the train station itself.
19th Century Hall (SL & Piano Museum) トロッコ嵯峨駅19世紀ホール
Inside the hall, there are exhibits of old steam locomotives as well as antique instruments such as pianos and organs. Visitors are also introduced to some of the most famous composers of classical music. As the area isn’t very big, we finished the exhibition within 15 minutes.
Tsuruyachousei, Arashiyama 鶴屋長生 嵐山店
After visiting the 19th Century Hall, we went to a Japanese dessert shop nearby. Tsuruyachousei serves authentic traditional Japanese desserts and sweets. Each set includes one dessert and Japanese Green Tea. Patrons can also purchase their packaged products as gifts and souvenirs.
Dessert set - 800-1000 Yen ($10.50-$13 SGD) each

Sagano Romantic Train 嵯峨野 トロッコ列車
We were very fortunate to be given tickets on Car No.5 (The Rich), which is fully opened with no windows. It has a glass ceiling as well as an open grid floor, which allowed us to view the scenic landscape of Hozugawa Ravine while feeling the natural cool breeze. Tourists and visitors do return to enjoy ever-changing scenery every season.
If you do wish to get tickets on Car No.5, you have to purchase them at the station on the day itself. Do purchase your tickets early as they do sell out very quickly.

The train starts at Saga Torokko Stationa and makes stops at Arashiyama Torokko Station and Hozakyo Torokko Station, before arriving at the last station Kameoka Torokko.
The train ride is about 7.3km and last about 25 minutes. After arriving at the last station, visitors can choose to take a return trip on the train or take the Hozugawa River Boat Ride back (purchase tickets for the boat ride at Saga Torokko Station).

We alighted and re-boarded the train, but this time on Car No.11. Sitting on the opposite side, we got to experience different sights. As our train passed by boats, we would catch glimpses of people waving at us. This reflects the hospitality of the Japanese that they are so famous for.
On our return trip, we also got to see a Japanese performer wearing a scary goblin mask. He was entertaining guests with his jokes and funny antics.
Overall, Sagano Romantic Train was a fun and relaxing experience! I guess it would probably be more scenic in spring with the blooming of cherry blossoms or in Autumn with the changing colours of leaves. However, the summer greenery I seen was vividly striking in its own way.
